Gifted is a family drama film that follows a 7-year old child, Mary (Grace) who lives with her uncle, Frank (Evans) in a small town near Tampa, after her mother’s passing. Mary demonstrates a remarkable knack for mathematics on her first day in school which catches the attention of her teacher, Bonnie (Slate) and the principal. This catches the attention of Mary’s grandmother, Evelyn (Duncan) who seeks to gain custody of Mary and move her back to Massachusetts, and prepare her for a lifee devoted to mathematics. Thus, a custody battle between Frank and Evelyn begins, both believing that what they have to offer is at Mary’s best interest.
A simple and charming tale of family and love, Gifted is a heartwarming tale with a sprinkle of comedic moments, which director, Marc Webb did a wonderful job of telling it in a realistic manner instead of your typical Hollywood take on family drama. It’s been a while since Webb did an original film, last was the quirky rom-com, (500) Days of Summer, so this had been a great re-introduction of Webb’s ability to tell tales of real people.
The chemistry between Evans and Grace breathed life into the characters as both delivered convincing performances. Duncan was a great addition to the cast as the uptight mother/grandmother.
Overall, Gifted is a great film to chill out to on a weekend.
