Here Comes the Boom (2012)
Running Time:105 minutes
Directed by: Frank Coraci
Starring: Kevin James, Salma Hayek, Henry Winkler, Greg Germann
The movie begins with Scott Voss (James), a high school biology teacher who became bored, lost his inspiration of being a teacher and simply fell into the routine. However, when his colleague, Marty Streb (Winkler) the head of the music department will be laid off, along with the music program to be discontinued due to budget cutbacks, Scott then attempts to raise $48,000 to keep the music program running. In order to raise the money, Scott trains to become a mixed-martial arts fighter.
Frankly, when I first watched this film, I was expecting another Kevin James flick, something with the flavor of Chuck and Larry and Paul Blart, however, I found myself quite surprised by it. It turned out to be quite inspiring at moments but without the “heaviness” that you’ll find in a typical inspiring school teacher film, but then again, it is not supposed to be that kind of film. So, I think what the writers and director did was they manage to find a nice balance between comedy, drama, and a little bit of action, with a pinch of inspiration. The actors delivered a believable performance, and I have to point out and praise Kevin James’ flexibility and willingness to constantly challenge himself physically in a movie. I think that’s one of the reasons why I’ve always look forward to one of his films.
Overall, it is an enjoyable family movie and if you want something inspiring but not too heavy, this is it.
